Representation

APISBMA is dedicated to addressing the severe underrepresentation of AANHPI individuals on California school boards, working to foster greater diversity and equity in educational leadership statewide.

Teacher Standing In Front Of Blackboard

The Asian Pacific Islander School Board Members Association (APISBMA) is steadfastly committed to addressing the underrepresentation of AANHPI individuals on school boards across California. Despite AANHPI students representing approximately 12% of California's student body, they currently account for only about 4% of school board membership, underscoring the need for school boards to more accurately reflect the demographics of the communities they serve. This disproportionate representation is not only a matter of ensuring equitable racial and ethnic inclusion; it also holds substantial implications for the future of community leadership, as school boards often serve as a springboard for political careers.

Recognizing the pivotal role that the school board plays in cultivating future leaders, APISBMA has launched a mentorship program aimed expressly at empowering and preparing the next generation of AANHPI individuals for service on school boards. The program pairs experienced board members with prospective mentees, fostering relationships that nurture ambition and leadership skills, and ultimately, aiming to improve AANHPI success in educational leadership roles. Through strategic initiatives like this, APISBMA takes a proactive stance in shaping a more representative and inclusive educational landscape.
